Former South Korean First Lady Sentenced to 7 Years in Prison for Bribery

A court in South Korea has sentenced the wife of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, Kim Keon Hee, to 7 years in prison for bribery. The Seoul Central District Court ruled that Kim Keon Hee accepted expensive gifts in exchange for job appointments and business favors. The former First Lady was tried for accepting bribes in exchange for brokerage. The team of Special Prosecutor Min Joong-ki, who led the case, demanded a 7-year and 6-month prison sentence, arguing that Kim Keon Hee repeatedly used her official position for personal gain. The court sentenced Kim to 7 years in prison. Kim Keon Hee had previously been tried for bribery and stock price manipulation. The Seoul High Court had increased a previous sentence of 1 year and 8 months to 4 years in an appeal, finding Kim partially guilty of stock manipulation and directly guilty of bribery.
