Can a Spouse's Frugal Behavior be a Reason for Divorce?

A woman who was fed up with her husband's frugal behavior applied to the Family Court for a divorce. The plaintiff claimed that her husband's excessive frugality had made their marriage unbearable. She alleged that he did not want anyone to come and go from their home, that their shared residence did not have livable conditions, and that even the basic necessities were not met.The woman stated that her husband constantly insulted her with phrases like "you left the bathroom light on, you flushed the toilet" and threw her out of the house. She said that even if there was only one potato left in the house, he would not buy new food or detergent, and that he even forbade her from brewing tea. She also claimed that he did not care about his personal hygiene and constantly hinted that he might cheat on her.The Supreme Court ruled that behaviors such as forcing a spouse to stay in the dark due to "high electricity bills", imposing heating restrictions, and limiting basic food needs in the home could be considered factors that disrupt the marriage union.
