The Turkish Statistical Institute's (TÜİK) 2025 Internal Migration Statistics revealed interesting data on city changes due to reasons such as retirement and home ownership. Last year, a total of 2 million 475 thousand 19 people migrated between cities, while 11 thousand 885 people left their cities due to retirement. The city with the most migration due to retirement was Istanbul, with 3 thousand 344 people. Thus, about one in three people who changed cities due to retirement left Istanbul. The cities with the most migration after Istanbul were Ankara and Izmir. 1 thousand 80 people from Ankara and 694 people from Izmir moved to other cities due to retirement. Ardahan was the city with the least migration due to retirement, with 10 people, while 18 people from Bayburt and 26 people from Muş changed cities for this reason. Istanbul was also the city that received the most migration due to retirement, with 1 thousand 103 retirees settling there, followed by Balıkesir with 921 people and Ankara with 828 people. Gümüşhane was the city with the least migration due to retirement, with 3 people, while 9 people moved to Iğdır and Siirt for this reason. The data also showed that home ownership is an important reason for city change. In 2025, the number of people who changed cities due to buying a house was recorded as 60 thousand 22. The city that received the most migration for this reason was Istanbul, with 8 thousand 189 people, followed by Ankara with 6 thousand 779 people. Kocaeli was the third city with the most migration due to home buying, with 2 thousand 548 people. On the other hand, the city that sent the most migration due to home buying was Istanbul, with 15 thousand 135 people, followed by Ankara with 3 thousand 172 people and Izmir with 2 thousand 746 people.
