El Nino's Impact: 50 Million More People at Risk of Acute Hunger

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that the rapidly strengthening El Nino weather event could leave 50 million more people facing acute hunger by the end of 2027. An analysis by the WFP shows that El Nino could exacerbate the existing global food crisis. In addition to the millions already suffering from severe food insecurity, 50 million more people could be at risk of acute hunger.The WFP reports that 225 million people in 45 countries are currently experiencing acute food insecurity, and El Nino could increase this number by more than 20%. The most severe impact is expected to be felt in Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Southern Africa. In South and Southeast Asia, reduced rainfall could negatively impact agricultural production, putting farmers in a difficult situation.The WFP plans to allocate at least $80 million for early warning systems and preventive aid programs to mitigate the effects of extreme weather conditions. WFP Food Security Director Jean-Martin Bauer stated that food prices could come under pressure not only in countries at risk but also globally, saying, "It's crucial to avoid a situation where major food exporters halt their food exports."The report also warns that excessive heat and rainfall shortages in the UK and Europe have negatively impacted harvests, which could further increase food prices in the coming period.
