Major Discovery in the Aegean Sea: Turkey's Largest Coral Reef Found

A research conducted by the Turkish Marine Research Foundation (TÜDAV) in the Aegean Sea has led to the discovery of the largest coral reef in Turkey, located between Gökçeada and the Greek island of Semadirek. The discovered coral reef, spanning 70 to 120 meters in depth and over 2 kilometers in length, is the largest coral reef in the Aegean Sea. TÜDAV President Prof. Dr. Bayram Öztürk stated, 'A coral reef of this size and extent has never been known in Turkish waters before.' 'This is not only a first for Turkey, but also for the Aegean Sea. There are no records of a coral reef of this size near the Greek coastline,' Öztürk said, adding that the boundaries of the coral reef have not been fully determined, but it may extend up to 200-300 meters in depth.
