WHO Warns of Cholera Outbreak in Sudan

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced a cholera outbreak in Sudan's Western Kordofan state. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated on social media that as of June 20, 2026, there have been 838 suspected cholera cases, 7 confirmed cases, and 117 deaths in the state. The outbreak occurred amidst disruptions to health services caused by conflicts. The displacement of the population has further complicated access to basic health services. Ghebreyesus noted that insecurity and access restrictions continue to delay the deployment of response teams and the delivery of medical supplies and humanitarian aid.The WHO is coordinating health responses with its partners, increasing cholera treatment centers, and points of oral rehydration. These efforts are part of the ongoing work to protect the health of the population in the region.
