Typhoon Dolphin Hits China: Over 1 Million Evacuated, Shanghai Sees Record Rainfall

More than 1 million people have been evacuated in eastern China due to Typhoon Dolphin, with parts of Shanghai experiencing the highest 24-hour rainfall in over 150 years. Authorities have warned of a risk of flooding and landslides. In the coastal city of Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province, over 900,000 people were evacuated from high-risk areas, and more than 1,500 emergency shelters were opened. In neighboring Fujian Province, 98,900 people were relocated from high-risk areas. In Shanghai, 215,600 people were evacuated from high-risk areas as of Sunday evening. At a meteorological station in the city center, 313 mm of rainfall was recorded between 07:00 on Monday and the previous day, the highest 24-hour rainfall in the region in over 150 years. Another station in Shanghai recorded approximately 400 mm of rainfall. Typhoon Dolphin weakened rapidly to a tropical storm level as of 05:00 on Monday but is expected to continue bringing heavy rainfall to eastern and central China as it moves north and inland. The rainfall is forecast to affect the provinces of Shandong, Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang, as well as Shanghai.
