China Braces for Dolphin Typhoon as It Approaches Coast

The Dolphin Typhoon, which has already hit Japan's Okinawa region, is now moving towards China's eastern coast. With winds expected to reach 162 kilometers per hour and heavy rainfall of up to 500 millimeters in some areas, evacuation preparations are underway to mitigate the risks of flooding and landslides.Chinese authorities have evacuated personnel working at sea, ordered ships to return to ports, and increased checks on dams and areas prone to landslides. The Dolphin Typhoon has left a trail of destruction in Japan's southern Okinawa region, injuring six people and causing power outages in over 50,000 homes.Heavy rainfall is expected in Zhejiang, Shanghai, the northern part of Fujian, the northeastern part of Jiangxi, the central and southern parts of Anhui, and most of Jiangsu until August 10. The rainfall in the central and eastern parts of Zhejiang is expected to reach 250 to 500 millimeters.The slow movement of the typhoon could lead to prolonged heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flooding and landslides, particularly in mountainous areas and near small rivers. The Chinese Ministry of Water Resources has warned of potential major flooding in the Qiantang, Yong, Jiao, and Shuiyang rivers, and small rivers in the most affected areas may exceed warning levels.
