The Impact of Diet Soda and Artificial Sweeteners on Cognitive Decline

A recent study published in the journal Neurology has sparked concern for regular consumers of diet soda and other artificially sweetened beverages. According to the research, regular consumption of low- and zero-calorie artificial sweeteners is associated with a faster rate of cognitive decline, particularly in individuals under the age of 60.The study, which analyzed data from 12,772 participants in Brazil over an eight-year period, found that the group that consumed the most artificial sweeteners had a 62% higher rate of cognitive decline compared to the group that consumed the least. The artificial sweeteners used in the study included aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame K, erythritol, xylitol, sorbitol, and tagatose. Six of the seven sweeteners were linked to cognitive decline, while no connection was found for tagatose. The researchers emphasized that the findings do not prove that artificial sweeteners directly cause cognitive decline, but rather suggest a link between the two. The lead author of the study, Claudia Kimie Suemoto from the University of Soo Paulo, stated, "Based on this study alone, I would not recommend that someone stop drinking diet soda due to concerns about cognitive decline."Artificial sweeteners have previously been linked to digestive issues, cardiovascular disease, and allergic reactions. However, existing scientific evidence has not provided conclusive proof that these products cause cancer.
The 2022 NutriNet-Sante study, which followed over 100,000 participants for nine years, suggested that artificial sweetener consumption may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease by 9% and stroke by 18%.Experts note that the new study provides important insights into the long-term effects of artificial sweeteners, but further research is needed to draw definitive conclusions.
