About 66 million years ago, the asteroid that hit Earth, known as the Chicxulub asteroid, is believed to have caused the extinction of the dinosaurs due to the extremely hot dust cloud that enveloped the planet, rather than the impact itself. According to researchers from Purdue University, this dust layer prevented heat from escaping into space, effectively turning the surface of the Earth into a massive 'oven'.The billions of tons of hot rock and dust that were thrown into the atmosphere created a globally lethal heat effect. Atmospheric sciences expert Dr. Alexandria Johnson stated, 'Any living thing that could not take shelter underground or underwater was essentially cooked or roasted.' The research suggests that the asteroid that fell near the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico threw over a thousand cubic kilometers of rock and dust into the atmosphere. As some of this material fell back to Earth, it further heated the air.Professor Brandon Johnson from Purdue University's Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences described the effect of the dust cloud, saying 'the shock wave or fireball produced by the impact alone did not reach a wide enough area to cause a global extinction event. The real disaster occurred when the vaporized rock and dust spread throughout the entire planet.' The researchers believe that without this dust cloud, many creatures would still have died, but it would not have resulted in a global mass extinction event.
