Miraculous Rescue at Sea: Sailor Survives 30 Days Adrift in the Pacific

California-based sailor Kai Sato was stranded at sea for 30 days after his sailboat's mast broke and his navigation system failed while attempting to cross the Pacific Ocean alone. Sato set off on his journey from the Catalina Islands on June 7, but during the second week of his trip, the mast of his sailboat broke, and his navigation phone malfunctioned. After losing control due to ocean currents, Sato was swept away, drifting aimlessly in the open sea. In an interview with Hawaii News Now, Sato described being swept southward for a week, during which he experienced great despair. When he was about 500 miles off the California coast, his boat's motor fuel also ran out, leaving him feeling completely helpless, as he expressed, 'I was totally defenseless, off course, and at the mercy of the current.' To survive, Sato tried to paddle his boat towards busy international shipping lanes, catching fish and squid that came to his boat, which he ate with the oatmeal he had with him. After about 20 days, when his drinking water ran out, he began collecting dew using plastic materials. Sato managed to stay hydrated by licking this dew. After drifting at sea for about a month, Sato reached the international shipping route between California and Hawaii, where he was spotted and rescued by the crew of the container ship M/V George III on July 21. According to the rescue operation report, the entire crew worked together to rescue the lone sailor, whose 32-foot sailboat with a broken mast was stranded about 900 miles off the coast of Hawaii.
