Ebola Outbreak in Democratic Republic of Congo: Case Numbers Exceed 1400

The Democratic Republic of Congo has seen the number of confirmed Ebola cases rise to 1406, with 438 reported deaths. According to the latest situation report from the KDC Health Ministry, the number of confirmed cases has reached 1406, with 438 reported fatalities. As of now, 192 people have recovered, and 609 are under isolation or being treated in hospitals. The outbreak is mainly affecting the eastern provinces of Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, with Ituri being the epicenter. Health teams are intensifying their efforts to detect new chains of transmission and isolate patients. The outbreak was declared on May 15 after 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths were reported in the Ituri province. The WHO declared an international public health emergency on May 17 due to the Ebola outbreak. According to health officials, the current outbreak is caused by the rare 'Bundibugyo' Ebola virus variant, for which there is no approved treatment or vaccine. Ebola virus, which causes a type of hemorrhagic fever, was first identified in 1976 in simultaneous outbreaks in Sudan's Nzara and KDC's Yambuku. The disease was named after the Ebola River, near which the outbreak occurred. The Ebola virus spread to West Africa in December 2013, and the subsequent outbreak in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone from 2014 to 2017 infected over 30,000 people, resulting in more than 11,000 deaths.
