Perpetrator of Víctor Jara's Murder Case Caught After Decades

The Chilean police have arrested retired Colonel Nelson Haase Mazzei, who was convicted of the murders of Víctor Jara and Littré Quiroga. Haase Mazzei, who had been on the run for two years, will now serve his 25-year prison sentence. The Víctor Jara Foundation has welcomed the news of the retired colonel's arrest. Víctor Jara was detained on the day after General Augusto Pinochet's military coup in 1973 and was killed four days later in the stadium's locker rooms. Jara's body was found with 44 gunshot wounds and 56 fractures. Nelson Haase Mazzei was sentenced to 25 years in prison. Despite his claims of not being present at the stadium during the incident, the court found him guilty based on witness statements. Víctor Jara Foundation: 'It's hard to see this as justice, considering it's been over half a century since Víctor Jara and Littré Quiroga were killed.' During Pinochet's 17-year military rule, over 3,000 people were killed or disappeared, and tens of thousands were tortured while in detention. According to witness statements, Pedro Barrientos allegedly said, 'I killed Víctor Jara with this,' while showing his gun.
