China's Fast-Food Market Growth Sparks Burger War

The shift in consumption habits and the inclination of the young population towards economical meals in China has initiated a massive transformation in the restaurant sector. As the country's Western-style fast-food market is expected to reach $87 billion by 2027, the burger category has taken center stage with an 18.4 billion dollar market size.
Economic uncertainties and the increasing number of individuals living alone are directing Chinese consumers towards fast-food chains rather than full-service restaurants. With 55% of consumers choosing burgers as their first preference among Western-style ready-to-eat foods, the sector is growing at an average annual rate of 8.7%. The product's suitability for delivery and its filling nature are the primary driving forces behind this growth.
The interest of global giants in the market is yielding tangible results. When Five Guys opened its first outlets in Beijing, customers formed long queues to place orders. Pizza Hut has also introduced its Burger Bar concept, aiming to reach 600 locations by the end of the year. Wendy’s announced its goal of opening 1,000 restaurants in China within the next decade. The competition is not limited to traditional burger producers; renowned hotpot chain Haidilao and coffee chain M Stand have also started opening special burger stores.
