Chad Withdraws from International Criminal Court

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has lost another member as Chad announced its withdrawal from the Rome Statute. The Chadian government notified the UN Secretary-General of its decision to withdraw from the Rome Statute. In a statement by the Chadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was stated that the activities of the ICC were examined and found to be ineffective. The statement said, "On July 27, 2026, the Government of the Republic of Chad notified the UN Secretary-General of its sovereign decision to withdraw from the Rome Statute of the ICC." Chad criticized the ICC's activities for being politicized, as most investigations targeted African countries, and called for the establishment of international justice mechanisms within the African Union. Previously, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger had also announced their withdrawal from the Rome Statute for similar reasons.
