Science Unveils 3 Billion-Year-Old Secret: Earth's Oldest Meteor Impact

A 3 billion-year-old secret related to Earth's oldest meteor impact has been solved through a research study conducted in Australia. Scientists from Curtin University detected strong evidence of the planet's earliest history in a structure located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. This discovery provides significant insights into the formation and early days of the planet. In the area known as the North Pole Dome crater, researchers found evidence of a meteor impact that occurred approximately 3 billion years ago. According to a study published in the 'Geology' journal, scientists analyzed the 'shutter cone' rock formation, which was created by the intense shock of the impact, to determine the age of the crater. It was emphasized that rock formations that provide an important archive of the severe geological processes that occurred during Earth's early days are extremely rare. Professor Chris Kirkland, a geologist from Curtin University, stated that these rock formations provide a 'rare window into the severe processes of Earth's early days.' Kirkland noted that the planet was very different during that period, mostly covered in water, and the formation of continents was still in its early stages. The study found that the impact caused the zircon crystals within the rock to recrystallize, leaving behind 'microscopic lightning scars.' Additionally, it was reported that apatite minerals were also reformed due to the heat and fluid movement caused by the impact. Scientists stated that the fact that these two different minerals point to the same period provides a strong 'chain of evidence' that confirms the age of the impact. Previously, the Yarrabubba crater in Western Australia was considered the oldest impact scar on Earth, dating back 2.2 billion years. However, the new findings indicate that the North Pole Dome structure is much older.
