Scientists Warn: Mediterranean Becoming a Haven for Invasive Fish Species

Scientists have warned that the Mediterranean, due to climate change, is becoming a suitable habitat for invasive species. Researchers have identified approximately a thousand invasive species and stated that this change is largely irreversible. The Mediterranean provides a conducive environment for the spread of invasive species through the Suez Canal. This situation alters the marine ecosystem and exerts pressure on native species. Invasive species, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean, are rapidly reducing the habitats of native fish and marine life. According to scientists, the Mediterranean is expected to warm by 2 to 6 degrees by 2100, which will further accelerate the spread of invasive species. Species like lionfish, balloonfish, and rabbitfish are continuing to spread westward in the Mediterranean due to warmer waters.
