Scientists Discover That Forgotten Memories Can Be Retrieved

A study conducted by Swiss scientists found that forgotten memories can remain in the brain as "silent memory traces" rather than being completely erased. Experiments on fruit flies showed that memories can be recalled with the right cues and that false memories can also be formed. The researchers taught the flies to associate a certain smell with a mild electric shock and then observed that they forgot this behavior after a while. However, when the flies were placed back in the environment where they were trained, they exhibited the avoidance behavior again. The researchers noted that this was not just due to the smell, but also the texture, lighting, and other environmental cues of the environment.
Analysis of brain activity revealed that the memory trace that guided the behavior weakened over time, while a hidden memory trace persisted in different neurons. The scientists emphasized that the study was only conducted on fruit flies and that the results cannot be directly applied to the human brain. However, they believe that the findings may provide important clues as to why people can sometimes recall forgotten memories and how false memories are formed.
