The researchers have named the cell 'SpudCell' and believe it could be a significant milestone in the field of synthetic biology.
The team notes that the artificial cell is more similar in structure to a simple bacterium than to a plant or animal cell.
The cell, which is composed of approximately 150 to 200 molecules, was able to grow and divide for about five generations under the right conditions. However, the team emphasizes that this cell is still a primitive and fragile prototype.
