Scientists Develop Natural Solution for Oil Spills

Scientists have developed a new bioremediation method that can help clean up oil spills more effectively. This method supports natural soil bacteria that can break down oil, allowing for the cleaning of contaminated soil.
The study found that bacteria can break down oil more efficiently under the right conditions. The research also found that ammonium nitrate-based fertilizers can increase the activity of these bacteria.
According to scientists, temperature, soil pollution level, and the type of nitrogen compound used also directly affect the cleaning process. As part of the study, podzolic soil samples were contaminated with crude oil in a laboratory setting.
The experiments showed that nitrogen biostimulation provided the highest yield in soils with high levels of oil pollution. Researchers stated that focusing on a single variable is not enough for cleaning up oil spills.
