Revolutionary Chip Developed to Operate at Brain Speed

Chinese scientists have developed a new generation chip that can model the complex structure of the human brain in under 10 milliseconds with high accuracy. Led by Peking University, this technology is much faster and more energy-efficient than traditional systems.
It has the potential to open up new eras in areas ranging from brain-computer interfaces to neurodegenerative disease research. The chip developed in the study performs calculations directly on the memory where the data is stored, eliminating the need for data transfer and significantly reducing processing time while increasing energy efficiency.
Produced with 40 nanometer production technology, the chip occupies only 0.28 square millimeters and operates at a frequency of 50 MHz. In tests, it demonstrated 3.82 to 36.27 times higher speed in neural dynamic calculations compared to advanced ASIC processors. It also achieved 11.75 to 24.73 times lower energy consumption. Furthermore, it showed a performance increase of up to 478 times compared to NVIDIA A100 GPU in three-dimensional reconstruction tasks of the brain cortex.
