Reducing Eating Time to 8 Hours May Support Brain Health
The effects of the food we consume daily are not only physical but can also impact our mental health. A new study suggests that focusing on eating within an 8-9 hour window each day may contribute to not only weight loss but also the preservation of cognitive functions. The study, conducted by researchers at Rutgers University, found significant improvements in memory, planning, and problem-solving skills. The study involved 47 women aged 50-79 who were overweight or obese. All participants were advised to have a daily caloric deficit of 500 calories. One group of participants ate within an 8-9 hour window, while the other group followed a normal 12-hour eating schedule. After six months, both groups lost an average of approximately 7 kilograms. However, the group that ate within the 8-9 hour window performed better in spatial planning and problem-solving tests. The study also found that this group made fewer errors in memory and learning tests. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of reaction time and the ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously. The lead researcher, Prof. Dr. Sue Shapses from Rutgers University, stated, "Weight loss can slow down some of the cognitive decline associated with aging. Our findings suggest that stopping eating about four hours before bedtime and reducing the daily eating window to 8-9 hours may provide additional benefits."
