Belgium's Heatwave Toll: Death Rate Rises by 39 Percent

The heatwave that has gripped Western Europe has caused more deaths in Belgium than expected. According to provisional data shared by the Belgian Ministry of Health, between June 18-29, the country saw 39% more deaths than expected. A total of 1222 deaths were recorded during this period. Of these, 530 were people aged 85 and over, while 180 deaths were recorded in the under-65 age group. The Ministry stated, 'The level of excess mortality during a heatwave has reached an unprecedented level in our country.' Last week, temperatures exceeded 40 degrees in some parts of Europe, leading to a significant increase in emergency calls and a heavier burden on hospitals. According to meteorological forecasts, the heatwave is expected to return in the coming days.
