Massive Fireworks Display in the Capital: 'Air Pollution May Reach Hazardous Levels'
The large fireworks display organized in Washington as part of the 250th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the United States has raised concerns that it could significantly increase air pollution and pose health risks. According to a report by the Washington Post based on documents from the National Park Service, the approximately 850,000 fireworks to be used during the July 4 Independence Day celebrations are expected to cause hazardous levels of air pollution around the National Mall. The fireworks are known to release large amounts of fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, into the atmosphere, which can reach the heart and lungs, causing irritation to the respiratory tract, asthma attacks, and various health problems. The National Park Service has warned citizens to avoid prolonged exposure to the polluted air around the National Mall and has recommended wearing N95 masks during and after the event, as well as staying indoors as much as possible.
