Barcelona Metro Fire: Passengers' Desperate Escape from Tunnel

A fire broke out on the L1 metro line in Barcelona, Spain, leaving passengers stranded in the tunnel. Due to the intense smoke, the visibility in the tunnel decreased, and passengers managed to escape by opening the emergency doors on their own and walking approximately 200 meters to the platform using the light from their cell phones. According to a report by Diari, a Barcelona-based newspaper, the fire was responded to by 22 fire trucks. The Emergency Medical Response System (SEM) teams provided initial aid to affected passengers with 19 ambulances. The Clot and Glories stations were evacuated, and train services were halted at the Clot station, where the L1 and L2 lines intersect. Xavier Flores, CEO of Barcelona Metropolitan Transportation, stated that preliminary findings indicate the fire was caused by a tunnel lining material that caught fire.
