How Gut Shapes Memory

How Gut Shapes Memory
A new study suggests that signals from the gut to the brain may play a crucial role in shaping memory. Researchers found that unhealthy diets can weaken this communication, negatively affecting memory. The study, conducted by researchers at USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and published in Nature Communications, examined the impact of gut-brain communication on memory. The researchers discovered that the vagus nerve, which facilitates communication between the digestive system and the brain, may not only regulate hunger and fullness but also influence memory formation. The consumption of nutrient-rich foods was found to increase memory-boosting signals in the hippocampus, the brain region responsible for learning and memory. However, when the communication between the gut and the brain was disrupted, this effect disappeared, and the animals struggled to recall the location of food.
