How Gut Bacteria Triggers Colon Cancer

Scientists have discovered how a common gut bacteria's toxin triggers colon cancer. This research may lead to new treatment methods in the future. The mechanism by which the toxin produced by 'Bacteroides fragilis' bacteria in the gut reaches colon cells has been identified. The study also revealed new findings that the toxin's effect can be prevented before it starts. The research found that the 'BFT' toxin produced by the bacteria must first bind to a protein called 'claudin-4' to damage colon cells. The researchers found that if this protein is removed, the toxin cannot bind to cells and cause damage.Scientists noted that Bacteroides fragilis bacteria are naturally present in the gut of about 20% of healthy people, but some strains can trigger chronic inflammation and contribute to the development of colon tumors.
