SpaceX Rocket to Crash into the Moon: Giant Crater Expected to Form

A Falcon 9 rocket stage from SpaceX is expected to crash into the Moon's surface today at a speed of 5,400 miles per hour. The massive space debris, roughly the size of a five-story building and weighing 4,000 kilograms, is predicted to create a crater over 17 meters wide near the Einstein Crater. This event will result in a massive dust cloud and is expected to provide valuable insights into the Moon's internal structure and geological processes. Scientists will observe the impact using NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and South Korea's Danuri spacecraft.
The rocket stage, which was left over from a launch in January 2025, accidentally entered a collision course with the Moon. The uncontrolled descent poses no threat to Earth but is expected to create a new crater on the Moon's surface. The violent impact will eject a massive dust cloud and debris into space, with some particles reaching heights of over 50 kilometers. By monitoring the impact, scientists hope to gain a better understanding of the Moon's composition and geological history.
