Australia Warns: GLP-1 Medications for Weight Loss and Diabetes May Cause Rare Eye Disease

The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration has issued a warning that GLP-1 medications used for weight loss and type 2 diabetes may cause a rare eye disease. GLP-1 medications work by mimicking a hormone that helps control blood sugar levels and appetite. However, research has shown that these medications may cause 'non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION)', a rare condition that can lead to permanent vision loss, including blindness. There is no proven treatment for NAION, and individuals taking GLP-1 medications who experience any vision loss should stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical attention. The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration has reported 36 cases of NAION associated with GLP-1 medications. NAION is caused by a disruption in blood flow to the optic nerve in the back of the eye and usually occurs suddenly, without pain, upon waking.
