Europe's Firefighting Capacity Falls Short

As Europe faces one of its most severe forest fire seasons in history, the lack of Canadair amphibious aircraft for firefighting efforts has become a significant concern. The growing fires in countries such as France and Spain have sparked debates about Europe's preparedness for climate-related extreme weather events.French President Emmanuel Macron stated that his country is experiencing the most forest fires since the end of World War II. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced that approximately 150,000 hectares of forest have been destroyed by fires in his country since the beginning of 2026, resulting in 13 fatalities.European Union Crisis Management Commissioner Hadja Lahbib announced that the EU has ordered 12 new Canadair aircraft. However, the first deliveries are not expected before 2028, and the entire fleet is not expected to be operational until the early 2030s.
