Warning to Vacationers: 'Flesh-Eating Bacteria' Alert on European Beaches

The extreme heat in Europe has increased sea water temperatures, causing the Vibrio bacteria to spread earlier than expected. A risk map published by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) analyzed sea water temperature and salinity levels, showing that the bacteria are multiplying earlier than usual due to the higher-than-average temperatures this year. According to experts, the Vibrio bacteria multiply faster in areas where fresh and saltwater mix, such as river mouths and coastal areas with low salinity levels. While the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean are generally considered lower-risk due to their high salinity levels, heavy rainfall can increase the risk by introducing freshwater into the sea. The risk map highlights the Baltic Sea and North Sea coastlines, as well as certain coastal areas in Bulgaria, France, Germany, Romania, and Sweden. In Spain, some beaches have been temporarily closed due to this risk. Experts warn that people with open wounds, cuts, new tattoos, or surgical scars should be cautious when entering warm sea water. The infection can be more severe in people with liver disease, diabetes, or weakened immune systems, and can cause severe pain, redness, swelling, and even sepsis in advanced cases.
