European Union Cuts Back on Drone Support for Ukraine

The European Commission has allocated 3.9 billion euros for Ukraine's purchase of advanced drone technologies, falling short of its initial pledge of 5.9 billion euros. This decision is part of the support program for Ukraine, which has a total budget of 90 billion euros.European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on social media, "Today, we are providing Ukraine with 3.9 billion euros for advanced drone technologies." Von der Leyen assured that the remaining funds would follow, without providing a specific timeline.Commission spokesperson Balazs Ujvari explained that for the full amount to be transferred, Ukraine must first submit its contracts with European drone and spare parts suppliers to Brussels for review.

Ukraine has the opportunity to request an exception; the Commission will evaluate it, but there is no guarantee of approval.

Ujvari also warned against the possibility of Ukraine using these funds to purchase weapons from third countries like the United States. For Ukraine to use EU funds in the US market, the requested military equipment must not be producible by European defense companies.The primary goal of this condition is to ensure that EU funds return to the EU's military-industrial complex. Ujvari noted that Ukraine has the right to request an exception, but warned that there is no guarantee of approval.
