Research Links Hot Pepper Consumption to Higher Risk of Deadly Cancer
A comprehensive analysis by scientists has found that people who consume a lot of hot peppers may be at a higher risk of certain cancers of the digestive system. The researchers found a particularly significant association with esophageal cancer, but emphasized that this does not necessarily mean that eating hot peppers causes cancer. The analysis, published in the journal 'Frontiers in Nutrition', evaluated the results of 14 different studies involving over 11,000 people. The study examined the potential link between hot pepper consumption and cancers of the digestive system. The findings showed that people who ate more hot peppers had a higher incidence of certain types of cancer, but the researchers noted that this does not prove that hot peppers cause cancer. The study found that people who consumed the most hot peppers had a 64% higher risk of developing digestive system cancers compared to those who consumed the least. The strongest association was found with esophageal cancer, with people who ate the most hot peppers being approximately three times more likely to develop this type of cancer than those who ate the least. However, no statistically significant increase in risk was found for stomach and colorectal cancers. The researchers noted that while there were findings suggesting an increased risk of stomach cancer, these were not sufficient to draw definitive conclusions.
