Study Reveals Why the Pain of Losing Outweighs the Joy of Winning

When making decisions, we often face two powerful emotions: the anxiety of potential loss and the regret of 'what if I had chosen differently'. Scientists have long studied these two factors separately. However, a new study shows that both are effective at the same time and that the fear of loss is more dominant than regret. In a study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania's Economics, Management, and Auction Laboratory, 228 participants were presented with two circular 'spinning wheels'. Participants would choose one and spin it, with the result determining part of their earnings for the day. Each participant faced three different pairs of wheels with varying levels of risk. The study found that the participants' behavior changed exactly when the risk of loss was eliminated, confirming the loss aversion theory. Additionally, it was observed that women were more prone to 'avoiding regret' and men were more likely to experience the 'joy of making the right decision' under certain conditions. The study, which measured the loss aversion theory for the first time with multiple options, is expected to help scientists better understand decision-making processes.
