Criticism of Germany's Military Spending: Threat to European Security

Sahra Wagenknecht, leader of the Wagenknecht Union (BSW) Party, has criticized Germany's policy of increasing defense spending and strengthening its military, stating that it does not contribute to resolving the conflict in Ukraine and instead puts European security at risk. Wagenknecht criticized the government's 'unconditional support for Ukraine' and increased military spending. Germany should focus on diplomacy and arms control rather than increasing its defense budget, she emphasized. The policy of increasing defense spending in Berlin is being questioned by many. Wagenknecht criticized the growing ideological mobilization in Germany and the abandonment of diplomacy, stating that this approach contradicts the goal of achieving peace.German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had previously announced that his country aims to increase its defense spending to 3.5% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2029. The German Ministry of Finance had also announced that defense spending is expected to increase to a total of 139.7 billion euros in 2027 and 153.9 billion euros in 2028.
