Heatwave in Germany: 9,600 Deaths in a Week

The high temperatures that have been affecting Europe have caused a significant number of deaths in Germany. According to a recent report by the Robert Koch Institute, approximately 9,600 people lost their lives due to the extreme heat between June 22-28. During this period, temperatures approached 40 degrees, and the total number of heat-related deaths since the beginning of 2026 has reached 11,900. The latest data from the RKI shows that 2026 is already the deadliest year in the past decade, despite not being over yet.Previously, the highest annual death toll in Germany was approximately 9,000 in 2018. However, the number of deaths in 2026 has already surpassed all annual totals since 2016. Experts warn that when the weekly average temperature (day and night average) exceeds 20 degrees, the risk of death increases exponentially.
