Germany Sees Over 5,000 Deaths Due to Heatwaves This Year

Germany has reported approximately 5,120 deaths related to heatwaves this year. A report from early July shows that the heatwave from June 22-28 led to a significant increase in deaths, with 4,310 heat-related deaths recorded during this period. According to a report by the Robert Koch Institute, from the 15th to the 26th week of 2026, about 5,120 people lost their lives due to extreme heat. Notably, the elderly were particularly affected by the extreme heat. By June 28, 2,950 of those who died from heat were over the age of 85. The Robert Koch Institute's report for weeks 15-25 of 2026, published on July 2, stated that around 810 people lost their lives due to heat during this period. The heatwave affecting Europe also impacted Germany, with a record temperature of 41.7 degrees Celsius measured in Coschen, Oder-Spree, on June 28.
