Germany May Reinstate Compulsory Military Service

The insufficient number of volunteer soldiers in Germany's armed forces has led to discussions about reinstating compulsory military service. Thomas Röwekamp, Chairman of the German Federal Parliament's Defense Committee, stated that the compulsory military service system, which was suspended in 2011, may be reintroduced.It has been emphasized that achieving the country's active personnel and reserve force targets solely through voluntary means is challenging.

I seriously doubt whether we can achieve our goals with just volunteers, and we need to have a thorough discussion about this. If we cannot achieve these goals with volunteers, we will have to reintroduce compulsory military service.

Röwekamp stressed that a political decision must be made by July 31, 2027, at the latest. Last week, the Commander of the German Army, Major General Christian Freuding, stated that due to the lack of sufficient volunteers for the Bundeswehr Tank Brigade in Lithuania, the Ministry of Defense may partially abandon the principle of volunteering.The law governing the suspended compulsory military service in the Bundeswehr allows for the reintroduction of compulsory military service if the number of volunteers is insufficient or the security situation deteriorates. The Bundestag can implement the 'compulsory military service according to need' model, which also provides for the random selection of conscripts in necessary cases.
