Germany Struggles to Find Soldiers as Conscientious Objection Applications Reach Record High
Germany is facing challenges in its efforts to strengthen its military as thousands of young people are applying for conscientious objection to avoid military service. These applications have already surpassed last year's total, prompting discussions about the potential reintroduction of compulsory military service. Germany has been taking steps to expand its military and increase the number of soldiers. However, recent data reveals a significant increase in the number of people opting out of military service for conscientious or religious reasons. The number of conscientious objection applications in the first six months of 2026 has exceeded the total for the entire year of 2025. According to government data, 5,862 people applied for conscientious objection by June 30. This number surpasses the 3,879 applications in 2025 and the 2,249 applications in 2024. As of the end of May, 2,667 of these applications had been accepted, according to the Federal Office for Family Affairs and Civil Society. Those whose applications are accepted are not required to perform military service but may be assigned to civilian duties in exceptional security situations. Germany currently does not have compulsory military service.
