The Date for the Commissioning of the First Reactor of the Akkuyu NPP Has Been Announced

It has been announced that the loading of nuclear fuel and the commissioning of the first power unit of Turkey's first nuclear power plant, Akkuyu NPP, are planned for the autumn of this year. Rosatom General Director Alexey Likhachev made important statements about the work at the 1st power unit of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant being built in Turkey with Russia's participation. Likhachev stated that the target for loading nuclear fuel into the first unit and starting the reactor is the upcoming autumn. Likhachev said, “If the reliability of the equipment and systems related to the reactor installation in the predicted operating modes is successfully confirmed as a result of these works, we will start loading fuel and commissioning the unit in the autumn.”

The Akkuyu NPP is being built in cooperation with Russia. The plant, which consists of four power units, each with a capacity of 1200 megawatts, equipped with Russian-designed modern 3+ generation VVER-1200 reactors, is a pioneer in the global nuclear energy sector. Fresh nuclear fuel for the first unit of the facility was brought to the site in late April 2023. A grand ceremony was held at that time, which was attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan via video conference.
