Nearly Half of Americans Don't Know What the Country's 250th Anniversary Represents
As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, a recent survey reveals an interesting dynamic between Americans' knowledge of history and their sense of patriotism. The survey found that 46% of respondents did not know what historical event the country's 250th anniversary celebrations commemorate. Only 53% of respondents correctly stated that the celebrations mark the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The knowledge gap is even more pronounced among younger generations. 61% of Gen Z respondents did not know what the 250th anniversary represents. 57% of respondents believe that the United States has strayed from its founding values, while 56% are concerned that the country may lose its freedom within the next 50 years. Respondents identified corruption, consolidation of power, and disregard for founding principles as the greatest risks to the country. 58% also argued that no political party should be given excessive power.
