Widespread Parasite Outbreak in 31 US States Leaves Hundreds Infected

A parasite outbreak caused by Cyclospora cayetanensis has spread across 31 states in the US, infecting hundreds of people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has expressed concerns over the true extent of the outbreak, with many suspected infections awaiting laboratory confirmation. According to CDC data, 843 confirmed cases have been reported since May 1, and 86 people have been hospitalized. Authorities believe that the actual number of cases may be much higher than the reported figures, as many individuals may have recovered without seeking medical attention. The states with the most reported cases include New York and Michigan, while Alabama has not yet reported any cases. The microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis is usually spread through contaminated water or fresh produce. Symptoms of the infection include abdominal cramps, bloating, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue, and mild fever. Health officials have not yet determined the exact source of the outbreak. However, in similar cases in the past, packaged salads, lettuce, parsley, basil, fresh onions, peas, and raspberries have been linked to outbreaks. Authorities recommend washing leafy greens carefully, discarding outer leaves, and cooking these products whenever possible.
