US Cyclospora Outbreak Claims First Lives

Two people have died in Michigan as a result of the cyclosporiasis outbreak, marking the first fatalities linked to the multistate outbreak that has caused severe diarrhea.These deaths are the first reported in connection with the cyclosporiasis outbreak affecting multiple states in the US. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services stated that death from cyclosporiasis is extremely rare and the infection is not typically life-threatening.So far, a total of 11,234 cases have been detected in Michigan, with 193 hospitalizations. Cyclosporiasis is an infection caused by a microscopic parasite that can contaminate fresh food or water, leading to severe diarrhea in infected individuals.According to the CDC, cyclosporiasis cases in the US typically increase during the spring and summer months, with the disease season usually spanning from early May to late August. However, this year's case numbers have far exceeded those of previous years.
