US Heatwave Claims 25 Lives

A severe heatwave that has been affecting the US for about a week has resulted in the deaths of 25 people. The heatwave, which has been affecting a large part of the country, has led to heat warnings for approximately 40 million people. Temperatures in the east and south have reached as high as 40.5 degrees Celsius. In New York City, over 378 people have sought medical attention due to heat-related illnesses. 22 people have died in New Jersey, 2 in Mississippi, and 1 in Illinois due to the extreme heat. The National Weather Service (NWS) has announced that heat warnings will continue in the eastern part of the country, with the heat index expected to reach between 37.7 and 40.5 degrees Celsius in cities such as Washington, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Raleigh, Charleston, and Jacksonville. In addition to the heat, severe storms and hail are expected in the eastern part of the country. The NWS has warned of possible flash flooding. The NWS estimates that approximately 34 million people may be affected by flooding in the region from Delaware to Connecticut, including New York City, with rainfall amounts potentially reaching 7.6 cm in some areas. Meanwhile, power outages have been reported in hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses in the eastern states due to the adverse weather conditions.
