10-Year Decline in Trust in Capitalism and Democracy in the US

A recent survey has shown that trust in capitalism and democracy in the United States has declined significantly over the past 10 years. The joint survey conducted by the Wall Street Journal and the NORC Center for Public Affairs found that less than half of the participants believe that capitalism works well in the US. About 10 years ago, a similar study found that this percentage was at the 60% level. The survey also found a decline in trust in the country's democratic system. Only 35% of the participants were at least "somewhat confident" that the US provides people with good job opportunities and the chance to achieve the "American Dream".The results point to increasing concerns among the public about economic opportunities and social mobility. The survey found that economic uncertainty, rising living costs, and political polarization are among the main factors affecting the public's view of the system. The study suggests that the long-standing foundations of American society, capitalism and democracy, are facing erosion in public trust.
