US Supreme Court Overturns Trump's Birthright Citizenship Ruling

The US Supreme Court has overturned an executive order by Donald Trump that sought to prevent automatic citizenship for children born in the US to immigrants and tourists. This ruling marks the second significant blow to Trump's policies since taking office. The court ruled that Trump's order violated the 14th Amendment of the Constitution, which states that 'all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.' The 1952 Immigration and Nationality Act also guarantees this right automatically for 'all persons born in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof.' The court cited the 1898 landmark case 'United States v. Wong Kim Ark' in affirming that nearly all children born in the US (except for those born to occupying forces, foreign diplomats, or on foreign ships) are automatically citizens. The Trump administration had argued that children of undocumented immigrants did not fall under this category, but the court rejected this argument.
