US Military Bases in the Pacific: A State of Disrepair with Asbestos, Mold, and Crumbling Walls

According to an investigation by the Pentagon's auditing unit, US military bases in the Pacific are facing serious issues such as mold, asbestos, and crumbling walls.An inspection of some bases in Japan revealed visible corrosion, fire damage, cracks inside and outside buildings, concrete crumbling, water leaks, lead-based paint, and asbestos-containing materials.These problems are not limited to the Pacific region. A 2022 report by the Government Accountability Office estimated a $137 million backlog in infrastructure maintenance as of 2020. Military housing in the United States has also been struggling with issues like toxic mold for a long time.
