US Economy Sees Unexpected Decline in Employment

According to the latest data released by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), non-farm employment decreased by 23,000 in July, seasonally adjusted, contrary to market expectations of an 83,000 increase.The June data was revised downward to a 20,000 increase, while May's employment gains were reduced from 129,000 to 63,000. This resulted in an average monthly employment gain of only 34,000 over the past 12 months.The unemployment rate fell to 4.1% from 4.2% due to a decline in labor force participation. The labor force participation rate dropped to 61.4%, its lowest level in the past five years.The largest employment decline occurred in local government education, with 50,000 job losses, followed by 19,000 in retail trade and 14,000 in financial activities.The health care sector, which has been a leading driver of employment growth, added 22,000 new jobs in July. However, this was below the sector's 12-month average of 36,000.
