EU Introduces Changes to Temporary Protection Mechanism for Ukrainian Refugees

The European Union is preparing to extend the temporary protection mechanism for Ukrainian refugees until March 2028. However, this extension includes a radical change that will exclude Ukrainian men of military age. EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Magnus Brunner stated that this decision is in response to a request from the Ukrainian side and represents a supportive measure.In a statement to journalists in Brussels, Brunner expressed the desire to continue protecting existing Ukrainian refugees in the EU, proposing a one-year extension of the protection mechanism. Nevertheless, he emphasized that the new proposal will exclude Ukrainian men subject to military service.

Commissioner Brunner also addressed concerns that this decision might constitute discrimination. He clarified that the current status of Ukrainian citizens of military age already in EU countries will be preserved, and the new policy will only apply to individuals entering Europe from now on.As of now, approximately 4.4 million Ukrainian refugees are registered with temporary protection status in EU countries. The Kiev regime has recently faced significant military personnel shortages on the front lines, leading to the tightening of mobilization conditions.
