TÜİK Reveals Time Allocation Habits in Turkey

According to the Turkish Statistical Institute's (TÜİK) 'Time Use Survey', last year, most time was spent sleeping in Turkey. The survey showed that women slept for an average of 9 hours, while men slept for 8 hours and 49 minutes. After sleep, the most time was spent on food and personal care activities. TÜİK's data indicated that the time spent sleeping for individuals aged 10 and above was an average of 8 hours and 55 minutes per day.Women slept for an average of 9 hours, while men slept for 8 hours and 49 minutes. The time spent sleeping was 8 hours and 41 minutes on weekdays and 9 hours and 28 minutes on weekends. The total time spent on employment activities was calculated to be an average of 2 hours and 39 minutes per person.When the time spent by individuals aged 15 and above on household and family care was examined by gender, it was found that women spent an average of 4 hours and 3 minutes, while men spent 58 minutes. The 15-24 age group spent the most time on social activities and entertainment.The activity that individuals spent the least time on during the day was sports and outdoor activities, with an average of 12 minutes. Women spent an average of 9 minutes, while men spent 16 minutes on these activities. When the average activity times were examined by age group, it was found that the 10-14 age group spent the most time on sleep, education, hobbies, and sports activities.The 15-24 age group spent the most time on social activities and entertainment. The 55 and older age group spent the most time watching TV, listening to the radio, and attending volunteer work and meetings. When the sports activities of individuals aged 10 and above over the last 4 weeks were examined, it was found that 11.7% went for a walk or run, 4.1% played football, and 2.5% did gym exercises.When compared to 2015, it was found that the proportion of individuals who played football decreased from 5.2% to 4.1%, while the proportion of those who played volleyball increased from 0.9% to 1.4%. When the entertainment and cultural activities of individuals aged 10 and above over the last 4 weeks were examined, it was found that the most common activities were watching TV (88.8%), spending time on social media (71.7%), and visiting relatives (67.5%).The proportion of individuals who spent time on social media was 77% for men and 66.6% for women. When compared to 2015, the highest increase was in the proportion of individuals who spent time on social media, which increased from 33.9% to 71.7%. The most significant decrease was in the activity of reading newspapers, magazines, and other publications, which decreased from 39.4% to 20.1%.TÜİK's 'Time Use Survey' results show how time is used in Turkey and how this use changes according to gender, age, and other factors. The survey provides insight into the time use habits of society and provides important data for future social and economic policies.
